Carbon Footprint

The Importance of Understanding Our Carbon Footprint

What is the importance of Carbon footprint? And why do we need to combat this? It is the measurement of human’s impact on the earth through their daily activities.

In our everyday lives, we may not know this, but we always produce carbon footprints.  It’s as simple as eating meat, driving a car, traveling by plane, or even by just turning on the AC. Most of our day-to-day activities requires fossil fuels. It requires coal to be burned, non-renewable resources like oil to be harvested, and natural gas to be consumed, among others. However, the process of acquiring energy through fossil fuels can be very damaging to the atmosphere. When fossil fuel is burned, oxygen will combine with carbon to create CO2 (carbon dioxide) and with hydrogen to form H2O (water). These reactions will produce heat and other harmful greenhouse gasses that will trap heat in the atmosphere causing climate change and global warming.

The effects of global warming have been seen throughout 2020’s worst weather disasters. Fortunately, there is hope. Households and corporations can still help turn things around and make a change by lessening the impact their lifestyle has on the earth.

There are steps, big or small, that you can take to help lessen your carbon footprints:

At Home:

  1. Avoid using plastic when purchasing your daily necessities
According to a study conducted by the Toxic Pollutants from Plastic Waste, “about 12 percent of most solid waste is made up of plastic”. Typically, 40% of the world’s garbage is burned, which generates more toxic fumes to greenhouse gas emissions. Avoiding the use of plastic bags or reducing its use will definitely lessen the amount of toxic fumes in the atmosphere.

  3. Install a rooftop solar PV system at home
There are many benefits to installing an on-grid solar system in the Philippines. Other than saving up to 60% off your monthly electricity bill, a study from Berkley shares that a residential solar panel system “has the capability of providing for the electricity needs of an entire home with about 80% lower carbon emissions than fossil fuels.” Imagine how great it would be to have the power to ensure more environmental-friendly lifestyle!

In the Office:

  1. Go paperless and utilize digital documentation.
On the business side, there are many benefits to going paperless in the office. In terms of environmental impact, banning paper from the office helps you save trees. Deforestation and fewer trees will not only contribute to climate change, but also lessen the quality of the air we breathe. If you cannot avoid using paper, recycle. Did you know that recycling one ton of paper can save 7,000 trees?

  3. Revamp company policies and procedures with proper energy management tools.
An energy management system is a thorough recalibration of a workplace’s ethics, processes, and infrastructure to promote an eco-friendly system. By utilizing an energy management system, you not only save more, but you are able to spot, keep track of, and manage all initiatives that contribute to creating a larger carbon footprint and effectively reduce it.

Understanding the importance carbon footprint, identifying where you can reduce your carbon impact is the first step into a more sustainable lifestyle.
